Shelby Calhoun has been a fixture in high school basketball since seventh grade. It was at that time that she joined the Varsity Girls' Basketball team at the Christian Academy of Louisville (CAL). Just two years later, she joined the 1,000 point club as a freshman; this past season, she snagged her 1,000th rebound. Heading into her senior campaign, Calhoun is just 95 points shy of 2,000. Yet her latest accomplishment has solidified her place amongst the best in the state - being named a Kentucky Junior All Star.
In a loaded 2020 class, perhaps the best since 2014, Calhoun's game shined. Against the Kentucky Senior All Stars, she managed a stat line of 12 points, 8 rebounds, and 6 assists to just 2 turnovers. Throughout the week, she shot a blistering 53.3% from the field and averaged four rebounds per game. Her outside shot was noticeably more consistent, which nicely complements her ability to get in the paint. As she continues to add muscle to her frame, Calhoun will be a force both inside and out.
The rising senior committed to ACC member Virginia Tech after an inspired official visit. The Hokies will surely benefit from adding her length, athleticism, and productivity to the stat sheet. Yet before that, Calhoun and her Centurions have more to accomplish, namely competing for a 7th Region Championship.
